The Historic Deadwood Lead Arts Council (HDLAC), along with the Praire Hill Audubon Society, will be sponsoring a wildlife photography contest with a $100 cash prize for best professional photograph, $100 best amateur photograph; and prizes for 2nd and 3rd place in each category. Photographs should be hand delivered or postmarked on or before December 15, 2009. An exhibit will be held in the HDLAC gallery January and February displaying the photographs entered. A $5 entry fee and submission form is required for each photograph submitted with a maximum of five entries. HDLAC will begin taking entries on December 1st. Photographs entered must be either matted or framed. For more information on the contest and exhibit, please call 584-1461. Judges will consist of one photographer, one wildlife expert and one visual artist. (All entries must be matted or framed with a hook for hanging.)
In the spirit of competition, all entries in the contest must be photographs of animals/mammals taken in the wild. No photographs should be entered taken of contained animals in sanctuaries, zoos, animal farms, etc.
The Historic Deadwood Lead Arts Council is pleased to announce that it is sponsoring a children’s book writing contest. The target audience for the books are children ages 3 to 8-years old. Judging will be based on originality and creativity. Entries must be 500 words or less. Judges will be one librarian, one elementary teacher and one parent of elementary aged children. A $100 prize will be given to the best overall book. The books must be bound such as a three ring binder, etc. (no loose pages). The books need to be submitted to HDLAC on or before September 25th. HDLAC will be sponsoring a booth during the SD Humanitites Council’s Festival of Books in Deadwood on October 2 & 3. Winners will be announced at the HDLAC booth during the Festival of Books.
Entries will be on display at the HDLAC booth for visitors to read and vote for their favorite. A People’s Choice Award will be given for best overall book, best story line and best illustrations. Winners in the People’s Choice Category will receive a HDLAC medal and certificate.
A $5.00 entry fee and application form will be required for each entry. Author maintains all copyright, and gives HDLAC permission to reprint and copy small portions of the book for promotional purposes of this contest only for press releases, HDLAC newsletter, HDLAC website, etc.
